Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico has recently clarified and shifted his positions on several contentious social issues, including gender-affirming care for minors and the participation of transgender athletes in women’s sports. The Texas politician, currently vying for a U.S. Senate seat, acknowledged that some of his past statements “missed the mark,” signaling a notable evolution in his public stance on these topics.
These adjustments come as the Texas Senate race intensifies in its final months, with recent polls indicating a surprisingly close contest. The outcome is deemed crucial for both major parties in their pursuit of a Senate majority in Washington, D.C. Talarico is challenging incumbent Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton, who has also faced his share of controversies.
Evolving stances on gender-affirming care and athletic fairness
In a recent exclusive interview, Talarico explicitly stated his support for a national ban on gender surgery for minors, affirming he would vote “absolutely” in favor of such legislation as a U.S. senator. This position marks a significant development from his previous legislative record. While serving in the Texas House of Representatives in 2023, he voted against state bill SB 14, which aimed to prohibit certain gender surgeries, puberty blockers, and hormone treatments for minors. Talarico explained his opposition at the time, arguing the measure was “overly broad” and that his attempts to narrow its scope through amendments were unsuccessful.
Regarding transgender athletes, Talarico now opposes transgender-identifying men competing in women’s sports if it compromises “safety or fairness.” He emphasized his commitment as a former public school teacher to the well-being of student athletes, stating, “Every sport has to be safe and fair.” This perspective contrasts with his earlier legislative actions in 2021, when he served on the Texas House Public Education Committee. At that time, Talarico opposed SB 29, a bill requiring public school athletes to compete based on their biological sex at birth, dismissing the issue as a “manufactured problem.” He later voted against HB 25, which enacted similar restrictions into Texas law.
Clarifying past controversial remarks on gender and divinity
Talarico also addressed previous statements that drew considerable public scrutiny. One such comment from 2021, made during his opposition to a bill concerning men in women’s sports, declared that “God is both masculine and feminine and everything in between. God is non-binary.” He admitted to being “provocative” with the statement, clarifying that his intent was to convey that human categories cannot define God, a theological concept he claims is not controversial and supported by figures like the late Pope Benedict.
Another statement that Talarico walked back was his assertion that there are “six genders.” He admitted this comment “missed the mark,” clarifying his current belief that there are two sexes, with a small percentage of individuals having genetic abnormalities. Talarico suggested that the focus on such comments by his political opponents is a deliberate tactic to divert attention from more pressing issues and his opponent’s alleged “career of corruption.” He specifically cited Ken Paxton’s acquittal in the state Senate, linking it to significant financial contributions made by two of Paxton’s billionaire donors to the lieutenant governor.
Campaign dynamics and broader policy vision
The Democratic candidate’s campaign event, a food drive in Dallas, coincided with the kickoff of the first-ever GOP midterm convention just miles away, highlighting the polarized political landscape of Texas. Talarico contends that his opponent’s strategy to highlight his past remarks is a distraction, asserting that discussions about “six sexes” are used to avoid talking about real economic struggles, such as high fuel prices.
Beyond the social issues, Talarico outlined his broader policy agenda. He was vocal in his criticism of the Supreme Court, describing it as “infected” with corruption and advocating for a comprehensive overhaul. If elected, he pledged to support measures aimed at reforming the highest court in the nation. His proposed reforms include:
- Implementing binding codes of conduct for justices.
- Establishing term limits for Supreme Court justices.
- Opening discussions about expanding the number of justices.
These positions underscore Talarico’s commitment to judicial reform, presenting a clear contrast with traditional approaches. He intends to keep his campaign message centered on economic relief for Texans, emphasizing issues of affordability. Talarico stated that across Texas, residents are struggling with the rising costs of essential goods and services. He highlighted the challenges many face in affording groceries, gas, utilities, and healthcare, promising that these concerns will be his primary focus until Election Day.
